Volunteer Opportunities at the Neighborhood Center

The Sisters of Saint Joseph Neighborhood Center is a community organization. Our mission is to provide support, resources, and services to individuals and families in need, and to promote a sense of community and belonging in the neighborhood. Volunteers are a crucial part of our organization, helping us carry out our mission and positively impact the lives of those we serve. As a volunteer at the SSJ Neighborhood Center, you will have the opportunity to work alongside dedicated staff members and fellow volunteers to provide a variety of services whether you have a few hours to spare each week or are looking for a more long-term commitment, we welcome volunteers of all ages and backgrounds to join us in making a difference in the community.

Food Pantry

3rd Wednesday of Each Month, 9:00 AM – 5:30 PM

The Food distribution day is the 3rd Wednesday of each month from 9:00 Am to 5:30 PM. From 9:00 AM to 12 PM. Volunteers are needed to unload the truck, pack bags, and prepare for distribution outside. Distribution of food begins around 1:00 PM until 5:00 PM or until we run out of food. During this time, volunteers are needed to hand out food, accompany the elderly bring food to their cars,   and distribute food.  Can you join us for an hour or two?

English Classes

Tuesday & Thursday Mornings & Evenings, Monday afternoon

Volunteer to become an English Language Teacher or a Teacher aide. Although all students are Spanish speaking, you are not required to speak Spanish. 99 percent of our teachers are English speakers.  Our morning session meets Tuesdays & Thursdays from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM and our evening session meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM.  Classes run from September to May. 

Spanish Literacy

Volunteer to become a Spanish Literacy Teacher or Teacher Assistant. To volunteer for this program, you need to speak, read, and write Spanish. The classes are on Tuesdays & Thursdays from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM. Classes run from September to May.

Diapers & Wipes

Our diaper distribution days are  Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM & 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM.

Volunteers are needed to organize a diaper & wipes collection among family, friends, co-workers, and churches and also to cut out coupons for diapers & wipes.

M.A.M.I.S Program

Volunteer to assist in the M.A.M.I.S. program.  The program meets on the  2nd and 4th Wednesdays of the month from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM. Volunteers are needed to assist in setting up before the program,  assist mothers during the program, and clean up after the program.

T-shirts or Pillowcases

About 275 bags are used each month on Food Pantry Day. We use Tee shirts and pillowcases to make bags for the meat. Volunteers are needed to organize a t-shirt or pillowcase collection or sew bags.

Collecting Food Items

Volunteers needed to organize a food collection:  friends, family, church, and co-workers. Food is always needed, and gift cards are appreciated.

Clothing Children/Adults

Volunteers are needed to collect, sort, and organize new and gently used children’s and adult clothes. It is a great way to recycle, support our sisters & brothers, and respect Earth.

Children’s Toys

Volunteers are needed to collect, sort, and organize new and gently used toys. Teach your children and grandchildren to share their toys and you will gain some closet space!

Household Items

Volunteers are needed to collect, sort, and organize new or gently used household items. We all downsize. Let’s upcycle our things for the good of our Neighbors and the Earth.

Casseroles

Volunteers needed to make casseroles to supplement our frozen food. Casseroles are accepted Monday to Friday.

Retail Rescue

Volunteers are needed to help us pick up food at various supermarkets in the area. We recommend using a van or an SUV.

Driver’s License

Volunteers are needed to help our Neighbors prepare for the test, take practice tests on the computer, and help teach “driver’s ed.”  Spanish Speakers are encouraged. 

Workshops

Volunteers needed to share financial knowledge about basic family budgets.
